The 70th Birthday event that started it all.

In September 2010, my nan turned 70. She wanted to throw a massive garden patry so that everyone could arrive whenever they wanted, open house style. So I was asked by my Ma, as my contribution, if I could do the birthday cakes. Cupcakes and a birthday cake. Well I’ll be honest, I didn’t make the birthday cake (it was a simple white fruit cake) as I decided that I was going to make 70 cupcakes (1 for each year) and they were going to take some time to make and decorate! That is a lot of work when you’re making them out of your tiny little kitchen and want them all to have some sort of consistency (I have a quality assurance background - detail is VERY important to me). My theme was elephants and purple, that is what I went with.
This was the first time I’d ever made something for more than what I would call home consumption. It gave me a real confidence boost in terms of what I felt I was actually capable of achieving and everyone loved the 70 cupcakes to celebrate the 70 years.

About:

I like video games, comics, rassling, zombies. Anything the masses would consider geeky, I would consider pretty damn normal. Combine them with cake and well, I guess you could say they make me a very happy girl.

Which is what I decided to do when I got made redundant in May 2010. After working with video games for close to 8 years, I was in no rush to storm back to work so instead decided to start doing some things I hadn't had much chance to do while i'd been working. Baking was one of them. Being a vegetarian and having a sweet tooth, i'd always rather have a pudding than a dinner plus personally, I think cake always makes the gloomy times a little brighter. I'd always been keen on baking and lets face it, getting made redundant is about as gloomy as it gets when you work in an unstable industry like video games so I started baking.

I started taking photos of all my 'creations' and feel now that I have a collection of a few hundred, that It was probably a good idea to start blogging about them and sharing the cake love!

Because as you probably already know, it is the little things that make this crazy world seem a little bit more bearable.
